Our History
What we know today as NAMI York-Adams Counties PA began as a local affiliate of NAMI Pennsylvania as Mental Illness Needs Devoted Support (MINDS) in 1984. Our organization has undergone several name changes over the years as terminology regarding mental health has evolved. The NAMI York County office was established when our first full-time Executive Director began in 2007, and a part-time Program Specialist position was added in 2008. Through word-of-mouth efforts, billboard ads, and announcements in local papers, word spread about our support groups helping individuals and families living with mental illness.
As a volunteer-based organization, NAMI York County increased programming to meet the needs of the community. Our first office was in the York County Economic Alliance building located in York, PA. Today, our office is located at 150 Farm Lane, Suite 100, York, PA 17402 behind the Royal Farms on South Queen Street.
Our programming has increased over the years to meet the needs of our community. NAMI York Adams offers many NAMI Signature Programs including weekly support groups, and education classes. In addition to our Signature Programs, we offer QPR training, Hearing Distressing Voices, and we are a core partner of the CIT program, training first responders.
We are immensely thankful for all our volunteers who give their time and talents to help others in our community and allow us to reach members of our community in need. Our wonderful, dedicated team enables us to live up to NAMI’s motto every day – “You’re Not Alone”. Together, we will break the stigma around mental illness and aid individuals living with mental health conditions in finding recovery.
